if you have no or very few tools, a craftsman multipiece set would be hard to beat for the money. really depends on what you intend to do with them. i used to be a craftsman whore, but i've been breaking a fair amount of them lately, so im not sure anymore. then again, $500 at snap-on/MAC/matco won't get you far. just make sure you have a good, large, complete set of 1/2 drive sockets, ratchets, combo wrenches (ratchet wrenches are nice too), various screwdrivers, breakovers, extensions, ect...as well as a good torque wrench and jacks/stands, and work from there.
